Charles "Barney" Byron Pettingill - 1908-1999

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 4 at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel in Marshalltown, Iowa for Charles "Barney" Byron Pettingill, age 91, of Waukon, Iowa. Pastor Jeffrey Frese officiated.

Charles was born in Grinnell, Iowa on July 21, 1908 to Roy and Hilda (North) Pettingill. He graduated from Grinnell High School. On September 16, 1928, Charles married Dorothy Evans, who preceded him in death in May of 1981. Together they raised three sons. On May 7, 1983 Charles married Neoma (Rinehart) Helland in Waukon, Iowa.

Barney served in the United States Army during World War II and was employed as a letter carrier by the Marshalltown Post Office until his retirement in 1971. He was actively involved in the Letter Carriers, VFW, American Legion, U.S. Power Squadron, Iowa Winnie Hawks, Winnebago International Travelers, and AARP. He was also a member of Grace Methodist Church in Marshalltown, Iowa. Both Charles and Neoma have been residents at the Iowa Veterans Home for the past five years.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dorothy; 2 sons, James LeRoy Pettingill and Jack Evans Pettingill.

Charles is survived by his son, Charles E. "Chuck" Pettingill of Waukon, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Susan Counters of Decorah, Iowa, Betty Christianson of Waukon, Iowa, and Mark Pettingill of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 6 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson; and 3 step-children and their children and grandchildren.

NOTE: The obituary did not list where Charles Pettingill was buried. His son, James LeRoy Pettingill is buried in Poweshiek County, Iowa in the Hazelwood Cemetery. His second wife, Neoma is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa.
