H. L. FISCUS, CAMARILLO, DEAD AT 90

Harley Lewis Fiscus, 90, an award-winning musician and organizer of the Carmarillo community band, died Thursday night at an Oxnard hospital after a brief illness. Born May 15, 1880, in Liscomb Township, Iowa, he came to Ventura County from Van Nuys 11 years ago. Besides forming the band, Fiscus has given public concerts and private flute, drum and horn lessons. A teacher of music for 71 years in Van Nuys, Canoga Park and Carmarillo, Fiscus had organized and directed the Van Nuys Chamber of Commerce Band and led many Christmas parades in that city as well as participating in seven Rose Bowl parades. A graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Fiscus organized one of the first Boy Scout bands in California in 1921. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Fiscus was honored at a community party attended by 300 members of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and their friends. Fiscus is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace E. Fiscus at the family home at 2388 Grandview Drive in Carmarillo. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Nina Chase of Redmond, Ore. and Mrs. Lois Kibble of Carmarillo; a step-daughter, Mrs. Marylin Clearihue of Boulder Creek, Calif.; eight grandsons, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Carmarillo, with the Rev Curtis Nimms officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth. Friends may call at the mortuary from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday.
