City Youth Dies In Navy Crash

WASHINGTON (AP) --- The navy Wednesday identified Aviation Electrician Mate 3/c Max Wayne Ewalt, Marshalltown, as one of 10 men killed Tuesday when their Neptune patrol bomber crashed into the ocean a few yards from the runway at the Barber's Point, Hawaii, Naval Air Station. Ewalt was the son of Mr. and Mrs Clarence W. Ewalt, 511 E. Boone St. Ewalt was born June 17, 1936, at Clemons and had lived there and in Marshalltown all his life. He is a 1955 graduate of Marshalltown High School and attended the Abbott grade school. He entered the navy Sept. 6, 1955. The navy told his parents Wednesday that four of the bodies had been recovered and it was presumed one was that of Ewalt. Funeral arrangements are pending further word from the navy.

Rites For Navy Flier Max Ewalt To Be Monday

Services for Aviation Electrician Mate Max Wayne Ewalt, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Ewalt, 511 E. Boone St., who died when his Neptune Patrol Bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean July 23 near Barbers Point, Hawaii, will be from the Church of Christ at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Brother Murray Warren of Waterloo will be in charge. Burial with full military honors will be in the Bethel Grove cemetery. The body will arrive at the Estel-Perrin Funeral Home Saturday afternoon. HE WAS BORN June 17, 1936, at Clemons, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ewalt. When he was young the family moved to Marshalltown and after attending Abbott grade school, he was graduated from the Marshalltown High School with the class of 1955. He entered the service Sept. 6, 1955, and, after completing his primary training at Great Lakes, he served in various installations before being assigned to Barbers Point in November 1956. He was a member of the Church of Christ. SURVIVING ARE his parents, four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Robert Dickey of Green Mountain, Mrs. Henry Bradley, Mrs. Harold Bowlin, and Mrs. Don Snider all of Marshalltown, Allen and Kenneth Ewalt at home. A number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
