C. H. Neff, County Pioneer, Is Dead

C. H. Neff, 79-years-old Marshall County pioneer and for most of his life a resident of the Liscomb vicinity, died Friday morning at 12:45 at St. Anthony after being ill since November. Mr. Neff died 15 days following the death of his wife and without knowledge of her passing.
Born September 4, 1863 at Liscomb his only absence from the county was a period of four years from 1894 to 1898, spent in Grand Junction, Colorado, and one year at Lady-Smith, Wisconsin.
Mr. Neff was born Carey Elcaney Hilsabeck, the son of Elvin and Mary Ann Hauser Hilsabeck. His mother died when he was 3 months old and for the next six months he was cared for in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Speas. Then he was taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Neff when later adopted and named him Carey H. Neff.
He was married October 1, 1885, to Frances Ann Veatch who preceded him in death January 13 this year. Surviving children include three daughters, Mrs. K. G. Arney, Marshalltown; Mrs. O. E. Brush, St. Anthony; and Mrs. G. S. Clapsaddle of Liscomb, and two sons, H. E. Neff of Beaman and A. W. Neff of Albion. Also surviving is a foster sister, Mrs. M. A. Hauser, Marshalltown; two half sisters Mrs. W. W. Arney of Albion and Mrs. Jim Grammer, of Oregon, and two half brothers, David Hilsabeck of Albion and M. C. Hilsabeck of Liscomb.
Mr. Neff also made a home for a granddaughter, Mrs. C. E. Small of Ames and Mrs. Mollie Lhamon Hilsabeck of Spencer, both of who are living. Nineteen grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren survive. A daughter, Mrs. Roscoe Fiscus preceded him in death.
In his active Liscomb life he maintained a keen interest in civic and church affairs of the community, serving as mayor of that town for a number of years.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Christian Church in Liscomb in charge of Rev. J. Willard Kerley and Rev. George W. Biersborn. Burial will be in the Liscomb Cemetery. The body will remain at the Estel Funeral Home in Marshalltown until Sunday noon.
