Pioneer Resident Dead

Apoplexy claims Martin Hilsabeck, at his home near Ferguson.

Death due to apoplexy claims one of the Marshall County’s oldest residents in the person of Martin Hilsabeck, age 69, who died at his home one and one half miles southwest of Ferguson, Thursday evening at 9:00. Mr. Hilsabeck who had been working in his garden all day was taken suddenly ill at about 5:00 and died at 9:00.
Martin Hilsabeck was born August 21, 1845 in Owen County, Indiana and moved with his parents to Marshall County in 1852. He had lived on the farm where he died for 50 years. February 22, 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Isabel Fiscus, who together with 9 children survive him.
There were 5 daughters and 4 sons. The daughters are: Lillie Hanson of Waterloo, Nellie Nugent of Liscomb, and Floy Benson of Laurel. The sons are: James Willard of Ferguson, Robert Nelson of Ferguson, Frank of Liscomb and Adelbert of Albion. There were also 2 brothers, John Hilsabeck of Cedar Rapids, who was at his brother’s home when he died and David of Gage, Oklahoma. Four sisters also survive him. They are: Mrs. Lydia Hoven and Mrs. Susanna Finders of Ferguson, Mrs. Isabel Manning of Tacoma, Washington and Mrs. Matilda Fortner of Sterling, Colorado.

The Hilsabeck Funeral
Relatives and friends filled the Christian Chruch at Furguson. It’s capacity for the funeral services of Martin Hilsabeck, held Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
Rev. W. H. Scott officiated. There was also a short prayer service at the home, one and one half miles southwest of Ferguson, at 1:00.
A profusion of flowers were sent by neighbors and friends, including pieces from The Ladies of Ferguson and The Hansler and Brook Factory of Waterloo.
The pall bears were nephews of Mr. Hilsabeck. They were: Oliver Lloyd and Boston Finders, Will, James and Charlie Speas.
In attendance at the funeral from a distance were: Mrs. W. A. Fortner of Sterling Colorado, Mrs. Ethel Miller of Sanborn, Mr. And Mrs. G. Ness of Randell, Miss Edna and Mamie Arney and Mr. E. Hilsabeck of Albion, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Hilsabeck, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nugent, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hilsabeck and Mrs. Charles Wiley of Liscomb, Mrs. O. Storm of Le Grand, Mr. and Mrs. John Hanson of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Powers of Cresco and John Hilsabeck of Cedar Rapids.
