Born in 1850, Bethel Grove Farmer Spent All of Life on Homestead

George Hauser, 91, probably the oldest native born son of Marshall county, died in the Deaconess hospital here Thursday afternoon after being taken there Monday suffering from infirmities of age. Born in Liscomb township's Bethel Grove neighborhood Nov. 8, 1850, a year after his parents had come to Marshall county from Indiana, Mr. Hauser was a member of one of Marshall county's oldest pioneer families. Mr. Hauser was the oldest of 11 children. A sister, the late Mrs. Eliza Whitacre, was born when he was 1 year old. ACTIVE UNTIL RECENTLY Active until last year, the pioneer resident spent practically all his life on the old Hauser homestead in the Bethel Grove neighborhood. Recently he had lived in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Hetta Furland, near Conrad. Mr. Hauser took a deep interest in church work and held a life eldership in the Bethel Grove Church of Christ. He as a member of the first baseball team organized in Liscomb township and was a pupil in the first district school in the northern part of Marshall county. At one time he played with the Bethel Grove band, a musical organization of statewide popularity in its day. On Sept. 14, 1873, Mr. Hauser was married to Ann Ketchum, who had come to Iowa with her parents in 1850 as a baby less than a year old. Mrs. Hauser died in 1938. FOUR CHILDREN Mr. and Mrs. Hauser were the parents of four children, Willard Hauser, who died in 1920, Mrs. Hetta Furland of Conrad, Mrs. Artie Nyce of Iowa Falls and Mrs. Ben Nugent of Liscomb. Also surviving Mr. Hauser are one brother and two sisters, L. W. Hauser of Liscomb, Mrs. Corena Brown of West Liberty and Mrs. Dora Robilliard of Faribault, Minn. The services will be held at the Bethel Grove Church of Christ at 1:30 Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. P. G. Dennis of the Central Church of Christ in Marshalltown, and Rev. H. N. Solliday, pastor of the Bethel Grove church. Burial will be in the Liscomb cemetery.
