Kathryn A Engel (94) of Ames, Iowa (formerly of Marshalltown, Iowa) passed away on Wed., Feb 25, 2009, at the Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames, Iowa.

Born Kathryn A. Wagaman in Lynnville, Iowa, on Oct. 19, 1914, she was the daughter of Fred and Ada Wagaman. She was the fifth of eight children, Minerva, Willard, Herbert, Charles, Harris, Claire, and Robert. She was the last surviving one.

She received a two year Teaching Certificate from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) and a Bachelors Degree from Drake University. She taught grade school for 18 years in central Iowa schools. She was married to Paul M. Johnson, a teacher, coach and business man who died in 1953. She later married Raymond A Engel, an executive at Fisher Controls, who passed away in 1986.
She was an active community leader in Marshalltown, serving on the YMCA Board and being an active member of the First Congregational Church, Elmwood Country Club and the Legion Golf Course. She also belonged to local chapters of Theta Chi and PEO.

In Ames she was a very active supporter of Iowa State University athletics and was named Cy’s Favorite Alum in 1993. She and Raymond were also dedicated to helping the Mechanical Engineering Department and she continued this support after his death. Kathryn received the ISU Honorary Alumna Award in 2005.

Before she became ill she enjoyed golf and bridge and was a talented creator of needlepoint and knitting projects.

She is survived by her son, Dale A Johnson, and his wife, Janice, of Mahtomedi, Minnesota; three granddaughters, Beth Byron of Portland, Oregon, Jean Hornnes of Lakeville, Minnesota and Julie Sexson of Mahtomedi, Minnesota; and seven great grand children.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Mar 2, at 11:00 am at The First Congregational Church, 312 W Main St, Marshalltown, Iowa. Lunch will be served at the Church following the service. A burial service will be conducted at 2:30 pm at the Riverside Cemetery, 611 N Center St, in Marshalltown.

Because of Kathryn’s continued interest in learning – donations may be given to Friends of the Marshalltown Public Library, 105 West Boone Street in Marshalltown, 50158.
