Susannah Carter

Susannah Carter, daughter of John and Hannah Carter, was born near Mooresville, Indiana, Fourth month, fifteenth, eighteen hundred thirty-three. In 1863 she with her mother, two brothers, Asa and Abel, and six sisters, Adeline Williams, Eliza Collins, Asenath, Anna, Mary M. Collins, and Rebecca H. Collins, moved to Marshall County, Iowa, her father having died two years before. Latter, in 1874, she, with her mother and three sisters, moved to Albion. At this place her mother and one sister passed away, leaving Susannah and her younger sister Anna. Here they remained until last December, when she went to Marshalltown to spend the winter with her sister, Mary M. Collins.

Susannah, at the age of twenty-two, began to teach school, which profession she followed for twenty-one years. Undergoing the many trials and difficulties of a district schoolteacher of pioneer days, she was very patient and proved a blessing to many lives. After she quit teaching school a large portion of her time was spent in caring for the sick.

She filled many offices in the Friends church, of which she was a lifelong member, the last service she attended being Quarterly Meeting, held at Marshalltown in the Second month. On returning from the service she was taken ill. The malady developed into pneumonia, from which she was relieved Third month, nineteenth, nineteen fourteen, when her Blessed Heavenly Father called her to her Heavenly Home.

Three sisters, Anna Carter, Mary M. Collins, and Rebecca H. Collins survive her.

She was often heard repeating the words,
“Just as I am, without one plea,
But that thy blood was shed for me.”

Her last conscious words were, Farewell, my Friends, Farewell my Foes, My love to these, My peace for those.”

Note: The date of her death is March 19, 1914.
