*** IN LOVING MEMORY OF ***
Dean A. Brown, 73 of Marshalltown, lost his battle with cancer and passed away Friday, June 6, 2008 at the Iowa Veterans Home with his family by his side. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 10th at the Elim Lutheran Church. He will be laid to rest at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery during a private family burial service. No public visitation is planned prior to the ceremony. Friends and relatives are invited to a reception and celebration of his life in the church fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service. A memorial fund in Dean's name is being established. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website. Dean was born on September 6, 1934 in Minneapolis, MN and attended school in Minnesota and later college in North Dakota. He served in the United States Air Force from Sept. 1955 to Oct. 1957 in Bryan, TX. Dean married Clara Mae Moore while in Texas and they had three children. After his honorable discharge, Dean moved his young family to the Midwest. He worked in the printing business and ended up in Marshalltown where he worked for the Times Republican in 1968. He later worked at the Gra-Iron Foundry and retired from Burke Marketing in 1996. He took up the game of golf late in his life and was a regular at the American Legion Course, easily recognized under that white bucket hat. Dean spent the last few years at the Iowa Veterans Home and enjoyed his time talking to people on the front porch. He attended several Bobcat games and was a big fan in his early years. Dean had several loves in his life: family, music, the outdoors and his Minnesota Vikings. He truly loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending a lot of time with his grandchildren there. One of the last gifts from the kids was an i-pod which he learned to operate like a pro. He could sit on a porch and listen to music for hours. He never missed a Monday night game and would watch NFL football at every chance. Dean, a loyal Democrat, always had something to say about the county we live in; and, I think he enjoyed several heated conversations with anyone that would listen. He enjoyed reading books and writing letters and had a regular letter to the editor. His last passion was to promote non-smoking.
Dean is survived by his three children: Craig Brown of Springdale, Arkansas, Cindy Bonebrake (Jeff Larson) and Candy (Jim) Hunt, all of Marshalltown; 5 grandchildren: Wesley Malcolm, Lindsay Lauer, Samantha Hunt, Abigail Bradford and Alexandra Stanfill; 7 great grandchildren: Grace & Josiah Bradford, Dakota & Jessie Malcolm, Carter Hunt and Caleb & Ava Lauer. Dean has extended family in Norwalk, OH: niece, Kirsty Smith and her family and nephews, Steve Brown and Pat Brown and their families. His sister-in-law, Clarice Brown of Norwalk is also still with us and a family treasure she is. Dean’s ex-wife, Mae Sutcliff also resides in Eureka Springs, Arkansas with husband, Harry.
Dean joins his parents, Eugene and Gladys Brown and his brother, Jack in heaven. He will be missed by many here on earth. Faith will comfort all, knowing he is at peace and without pain.
