Catherine Elizabeth Kempker (Kaye) Nacke Cooper was born in Rolfe, Iowa, May 4, 1913. She was the only child of Frank and Regina (Carroll) Nacke. She attended grade school and high school in Rolfe, graduating in 1930. She entered Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa and later transferred to the University of Iowa at Iowa City, graduating in 1936 with a B.A. degree in Communications and Theater Arts. While at the University she was named Beauty Queen, and Honorary Cadet Colonel of the ROTC at the Military Ball. She also represented the University at the Drake Relays and other public functions. She played the lead in several University plays, some under the direction of the noted Professor E.C. Mabie, and spent one summer as a member of the Farragut Players, a professional theater group in Rye Beach, New Hampshire. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa she moved to California and became a member of the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. She appeared in plays there and also at the Callboard Theater in Hollywood where several plays had been written especially for her. She did some movie work at Warner Brothers Studio and Republic Pictures as well as work in radio at NBC and very early television at the Don E. Lee Studio.
In 1945 she married Dr. H. D. Pate, a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy and they moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where Dr. Pate was in medical practice with his father. They had one daughter, Jennifer, now Mrs. John F. Cramer, Jr.
After her husband's death in 1967 she continued to live in New Mexico until her marriage in 1982 to Glenn G. Cooper of Marshalltown, Iowa. He died in 1993. She was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, Elmwood Country Club, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, National Collegiate Players and a member of the President's Club and the Kinnick Society of the University of Iowa. She is survived by her daughter and Son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Cramer, Jr. of Baldwin City, KS, step-children, Robert Cooper of Austin, TX., Anne McPartlin of Great Falls, MT, three grandchildren, John F. Cramer III of Baldwin City, KS., Mr. and Mrs. Joseph D. Cramer of Spring, TX., Jeffrey J. Cramer of Orlando, Fl., and 5 great grandchildren Kenny, Josh, Jack Grant, and Lizzy. Services for Catherine Cooper are pending. Interment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website.
