Jack Schrader, 80, of Marshalltown, died early Wednesday morning, May 14th, at his home while in the loving care of his family and the Iowa River Hospice. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 20th, at the 1st United Methodist Church with Pastor Dale Batcheler officiating. There will be no visitation. Jack, a very giving person in life, has also given in death – he has deeded his body to the University of Iowa for research. Memorials in Jack's name may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice or to Camp Mitigwa, the Boy Scout camp near Boone where he had so many fond memories. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website. Born on October 12th, 1927, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Ray and Alice (Miller) Schrader. He attended school in Grandview, Iowa, and soon left to join the United States Navy. He served our country honorably in the last years of WWII for four years and later served three years in the US Army. Jack came to Marshalltown and worked at the Iowa Veterans Home and later the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center for 35 years. Mr. Schrader was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church, former member of the Marshalltown Noon Lion’s Club, the Quarterback Club, VFW, the Arby’s Afternoon Coffee Club and was a passionate Boy Scout of America- earning Scouter of the Year, the Silver Beaver Award, Woodbadge and woodbadge trainer, Order of the Arrow, Vigil Honor, and enjoyed many trips to Philmont, the Boundary Waters, hiking and canoe trips and anything promoting Boy Scouting. Jack was a member of BSA Troop #317 at 1st United Methodist, #302 at the VFW and #403 at Pleasant Hill for challenged young scouts. He also enjoyed softball and was a member of ORF’s (old retired farts), a recipient of the Warren Coleman Award - the Iowa Lion’s Club’s award for dedicated service and the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce Community Pride Award. Many may remember his nicknames for people including “fat boy”, “Sad Sam” and a list of others as well as his teasing and fun-loving nature. Left to celebrate his life are his loving wife, Mary (Koehler) whom he married on September 12th, 1956, in Los Angeles, sons Robert (Etta) and David (Teresa) all of Marshalltown, daughter Susan Schrader of Greenville, SC, four grandchildren: Keith (Crystal), Steven, Julie and Whitney, his brother Larry of Oakville, Iowa and sister Betty Bohling of Rancho Cordova, CA, as well as many, many friends and other family members. In death he has rejoined his parents, brothers Bud and Max and sister Joyce Seusens.
