William "Bill" John Lyle, 79, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away May 3rd, 2008, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Visitation will be Monday, May 5th 6-8 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 6th at Laurel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. For condolences, please visit the funeral home's website. Bill was born September 17, 1928, in rural Kellogg, the son of James and Rachel (Bates) Lyle. He graduated from Laurel High School in 1947 and helped his Dad with farming. In 1948 he was united in marriage to Alice Muller. He farmed the family farm northwest of Laurel until his retirement in 1991. He continued to help with planting and harvesting until his health failed in 2006. Bill enjoyed going to auctions, flea markets, and even garage sales, making many friends there. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice, and their three children: daughter Gail Ann (Skip) Nichols of Palmyra, MO, son Dr. Kim William (Mary) Lyle of Iowa City, and son Mark Alan (Jana) Lyle of rural Haverhill; four grandchildren: Joshua (Natalie) Nichols of Columbia, MO, William (fiancé Jessie) Nichols of San Francisco, CA, Sara (Greg) Pickett of State Center, and Emily Lyle of rural Haverhill; a brother, James Lyle of rural Haverhill and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Lyle of Marshalltown. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brother David, and sister-in-law Arlene.
