Thomas R. Borton, 85, of rural State Center, died Monday afternoon, January 21st, at the Israel Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services celebrating Tom’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25th, at the Rhodes United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeffrey R. Frese officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Eden Cemetery at Rhodes. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home West Marshall Chapel in State Center from 4-7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Born Thomas Robert Borton on September 18th, 1922, near St. Anthony, Iowa, he was the son of Russell and Hazel (Alexander) Borton. He attended the St. Anthony School and Christian Church. He always enjoyed doing farm work. He entered the armed forces (U.S. Army) November of 1943 and served until January of 1946 in the 592 Field Artillery of the 106th Division. He was with a gun crew who survived the Battle of the Bulge and received four battle stars, four ribbons and several medals. He married Pauline G. Schulz, daughter of William E. and Myrtle (Stamps) Schulz at Santa Monica, CA. on March 19, 1944. They started farming in February 1946 southwest of State Center and have lived in that area since; except for three years they lived east of Clemons. Mr. Borton was affiliated with the Rhodes United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, caring for livestock and playing cards. His greatest joy was being with his family. He was a member of the Rhodes American Legion. Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Pauline, daughter Mary Lou (Alvin) Mau of Ida Grove and son Paul (Anita) Borton of rural State Center, grandchildren: Jed Borton of Melbourne, Todd (Michelle) Borton of State Center, Lori (Kenny) Davis of St. Anthony, Rachelle Mau of Humboldt and Janice Mau of Avoca, great-grandchildren: Terri, Jake, and Bailey Sue Borton and one brother, George (Vianna) Borton of Zearing. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers- Herbert, Harold and James and two brothers in infancy.
