Geraldine Polak, 90, of Winterset since 2004, former lifelong Marshalltown resident, died Friday afternoon, January 6th, at the Madison County Hospital in Winterset while in care of Hospice. Her death came peacefully at 12:55 P.M. with family at her side.
Funeral Mass and a celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, January 10th, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church with Fr. Louis Jaeger officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 4-7:00 P.M. on Monday with a public scripture service at 7:00 and a Council of Catholic Women Rosary at 4:00 P.M., both at the funeral home. Born Geraldine Banzhaf on February 23rd, 1915, in Marshalltown, she was one of four children born to Leo and Anna (Watco) Banzhaf. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Marshalltown in 1933.
On October 22nd, 1936, she was united in marriage to Joseph Polak in Marshalltown. They made Marshalltown their home all of their married lives where she was employed at Niehouse Cleaners for 13 years and a faithful member of St. Henry’s parish, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Altar and Rosary Society and the Golden Classics.
Left to mourn her loss are her three children: Marlene (Paul) Early of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Joseph (Doris) Polak of Macon, Missouri and Sharon McCauley of Winterset, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Mabel Polak and sister-in-law Rose Vajgrt both of Marshalltown, her South 1st Avenue neighbor family, nieces Gerry Best of Marshalltown and Mary Jo Orkild of Phoenix, AZ and nephews Bill Banzhaf of Marshalltown and Charles Stepan of Dayton, Ohio, and a host of friends.
In death she has rejoined her parents, her beloved Joseph who died May 8th, 1968, son-in-law Robert McCauley on December 12, 2004, her siblings Earl Banzhaf, Viola Stepan and Joseph Eugene Banzhaf and great-granddaughter Hannah Winovich.
