FIRE AT ST. ANTHONY
~
St. Anthony, Ia. Jan. 5 – Fire which originated in the pool room here yesterday completely destroyed the pool room, harness shop and hotel. A vacant lot between the drug store and the harness shop saved the former and probably the rest of the town. By hard work on the part of the citizens the flames were confined to the three buildings. Part of the stock was gotten out of the harness shop and most of the hotel furniture was saved. Everything in the pool room was consumed. The St. Paul and Kansas City grain elevator and the Iowa Central depot were in danger for a time, but water was used freely and they were saved. That the wind was in the south is probably due to the fact that the town is not today a heap of ashes, for had it been blowing from the east it would have been impossible to have stayed the flames.
