Can anyone help find a lost McKinnis?

In the 1870's, two sons of James McKinnis married in Marion Co. [and thanks for the earlier help on those!]. One son, Charles McKinnis, who married Clara Lindsley, moved west to California. He was a blacksmith at Ft. Bidwell in 1880, but the Fort closed in 1892. He supposedly died in 1897. His widow first remained in ne. California, but she later moved to live with her son William in Oregon. No one has been able to find any record of Charles' death or burial. Folks thought that he or his wife might have kept touch with Marion Co., and possibly his passing would have been noted in a local newspaper. Can anyone help with this mystery?
