Ruth Lorraine Jones was born Aug. 26, 1938, in Mitchell, Ill. to Leslie and Emily LaRose Jones. She grew up in Illinois. On June 9, 1956, the day after high school graduation, she married William Robert Wiegand at St. Elizabeth Church in Mitchell, Ill. They lived in Montgomery, Ala., where William was stationed with the United States Air Force. After his discharge they moved to Mitchell, Ill. In 1963 they moved to Decatur, Ill., where their three children were born. They moved to Ohio, Kentucky and Kansas; in 1976 they moved to Pella.
Ruth was a homemaker. She was diagnosed with diabetes in 1969, but Ruth remained active as a volunteer grade school aide, with Work of Our Hands, Meals on Wheels and Share Iowa. They lived in Pella the rest of their lives except for five years when their work with Share Iowa took them to Oskaloosa. Ruth eventually lost her eyesight and needed dialysis, and was confined to their home with their dog, Mitzi. She was able to visit her son in Indiana a month before her death.
She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Parish in Pella, and enjoyed sewing and quilting.
She is survived by her husband, Deacon William R. Wiegand; three children and spouses: Cathryn and John Segur of Rome, Ga., Karen and Wayne Van Walbeek of Pella and Leroy and Natasha Wiegand of Peru, Ind.; five grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Loretta and John Worthen of Mitchell, Ill., and Violet and Robert Clifton of Edwardsville, Ill.; and nephews Richard and Wayne Worthen and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson, Joseph Van Walbeek.
