PELLA - Verna Mae Hoekman, 85, of Des Moines and formerly of Pella, died Saturday, Sept. 29, at Valley View Village in Des Moines.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. Barry Wynveen officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Memorials may be given. Visiting hours at the funeral home are open today and continue all day Tuesday, with family present 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday.
Verna Mae Klootwyk was born July 18, 1916, in Pella to John and Anna Valkenburg Klootwyk. She attended Pella public schools and graduated from Pella High School.
On Feb. 22, 1940, she married Fred Hoekman in Pella. They raised their family in Pella. In 1961 they moved to Des Moines. Verna was a homemaker. Fred died Feb. 13, 1991. Verna later moved to Grandview Care Center in Des Moines, and in October 2000 moved to Valley View Village.
She was a member of Bethany Reformed Church in Des Moines, where she enjoyed making quilts. She also did other sewing and handwork projects. She was known for her cooking talents.
She is survived by four children and spouses: Wilfred V. and Jean Hoekman of Des Moines, Robert M. Hoekman of Phoenix, Ariz., Kenneth D. and Mary Hoekman of Des Moines and Charlene K. Hoekman and Paul Griffin of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Wanda (Raymond Klootwyk) Ellis of Sarasota, Fla.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1947; her husband, Fred; her parents; and two younger brothers and a sister-in-law: Ernest and Matilda Klootwyk and Raymond Klootwyk.
