PELLA - Velma Louise Huston Wilcox, 96, of Pella, died Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Long Term Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center.

Her funeral service was 9 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, the Rev. James R. Beranek officiating. Burial: 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, in Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Memorials: Hospice of Pella Comfort House.

Velma Louise Huston was born Nov. 11, 1906, in Hutchinson, Kan., to Izai Lemuel and Laura Ellen Day Huston. She contracted polio at a young age. She attended elementary school in Hutchinson and graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Mo. She danced professionally in many vaudeville-style productions across the Midwest. She was featured in the McCall-Bridge Ballet, most of whose members were graduates of well-known schools of performing arts.

On Oct. 17, 1930, she married George Albert Wilcox in Kansas City, Mo. They had one child, Carol Lynn, on Nov. 11, 1937. They lived in Kansas City the rest of their married life. Velma was active in her husband's window design business for Berkson's Clothing Store and later for large companies such as Trans World Airlines and Macy's. She also cared for family members when they were ill.

George died Nov. 1, 1982. Velma moved to the Long Term Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center in 1998. She enjoyed playing solitaire and wordfinds, and enjoyed garage sales.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Carol L. and Richard M. Sparks of Pella; four grandchildren and spouses: David S. and Shawn Leimer of Kewanee, Ill., Sandra L. and Michael Wallace of Pella, Daniel J. Sparks of Knoxville and Randall M. Sparks of New Sharon; and a nephew and spouse, Robert and Lottie Lenagar of Overland Park, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and seven brothers and sisters.
