PELLA - Mary Irene Van Rheenen, 86, of Pella, died Friday, Dec. 20, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa.
She will have two funeral services; 7 p.m. today at Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, Pastor Chris Piersma officiating; and 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Reformed Church in Pella, Pastor Norm Kolenbrander officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Pella. Memorials: Trinity Reformed Church Quilting Group. Visiting hours are open today at the funeral home, with family present 5-7 p.m. today.
Mary Irene Van Rheenen was born March 8, 1916, in Pella to Ira P. and Mary L. Grandia De Cook. She lived all her life in the Pella area.
On Feb. 16, 1938, she married John L. Van Rheenen in Pella. She was employed by Central College Food Service and retired in 1986. She was a wonderful cook and shared cookies and cakes with shut-ins and nursing home residents. She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Pella.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Irvin and Ethel Van Rheenen and Henry and Donna Van Rheenen, all of Pella; two daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Van Wyk and Duane Van Maanen of Pella, and Rebecca and Gary Pickens of Bakersfield, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Peter Irvin De Cook; her husband, John, on July 30, 1962; a son, Peter Irvin Van Rheenen, stillborn; and a son-in-law, Gene Van Wyk.
