PELLA - La Vina Marie Steel Ruthven, 84, of Pella, died Thursday, July 25, at Pella Regional Health Center.

Her funeral service was 2 p.m. today, July 29, at Second Reformed Church in Pella, the Revs. Sophie and Steve Mathonnet-Vander Well officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Pella. Memorials: Second Reformed Church in Pella. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella was in charge of arrangements.

La Vina Marie Steel was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Van Buren County near Douds to Harry Elvis and Laura Marie Arnold Steel. She graduated from Douds Community Schools. She attended two summer sessions at a college in Fairfield, and completed her education at William Penn College in Oskaloosa with a four-year degree. She taught in Douds and Morning Sun.

She married James Alexander Ruthven on June 9, 1940, in Memphis, Mo. They lived in Eddyville and moved to Pella in 1948. In 1960, La Vina began teaching grade school in Otley, where she taught all grades and completed her 22 years of teaching.

After retiring, she enjoyed traveling, knitting, latch hook, and playing cards with friends. She enjoyed babysitting with her grandchildren. She was a member of Second Reformed Church in Pella, where she belonged to the Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her husband, James A. Ruthven of Pella; three children and spouses: Jeanne A. and Michael Baer of Las Vegas, Nev., James H. and Judy Wellbrook Ruthven of Gunnison, Colo., and Robert A. and Carma Cade Ruthven of Pella; four grandchildren; and a grandson-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
