PELLA - Johanna Pothoven, 82, of Pella and formerly of Sully, died Monday, July 22, in the Long Term Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center.

Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully, the Rev. Stephen Veldhuis officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Pella. Memorials: Sully Christian Grade School. Visiting hours are open today at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, with family present 6-8 p.m. today.

Johanna Blom was born Feb. 13, 1920, near Eddyville to Johannes and Neeltje Van Zee Blom. She attended Fleming Country Grade School, then Peoria Christian Grade School through eighth grade.

On Sept. 20, 1939, she married Lester Andrew Pothoven at the home of her sister, Nellie Nibbelink, near Peoria; her brother-in-law, the Rev. William C. De Jong, officiated.

Johanna was a homemaker and Lester farmed in Mahaska County near Peoria, Taintor and New Sharon. In 1983 they retired and moved into Sully after Johanna was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

In January 1999 they moved to the Long Term Care Unit at Pella Regional Health Center. Johanna was a longtime member of Sully Christian Reformed Church. She loved music and singing with a women's quartet, and enjoyed attending sporting events, gardening and raising flowers, and poetry.

She is survived by her husband, Lester, of Pella; eight children and spouses: Robert W. and Janice Vos Pothoven of Kellogg, John P. Pothoven of Oskaloosa, Howard J. and Pamela Schuttinga Pothoven of Pella, Lois J. and Simon Ugwouke of Raleigh, N.C., Raymond L. and Mary Lourens Pothoven of Pella, Virginia L. and Allen Vander Hart of Grand Rapids, Mich., Murray D. and Kendra Ball Pothoven of Kellogg and Kent B. Pothoven of Sully; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Danny J. Pothoven; a granddaughter, Traci Pothoven; and siblings Henrietta Huyser, Cornelia Vander Hart, Teunis Blom, Marie De Jong, Frances De Jong, Nellie Nibbelink and Frank Blom.
