PELLA - Katie Klein, 86, of Pella, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Sheltered Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center.

Her funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. James Ebbers and the Rev. Kenneth Dykstra officiating. Burial: Graceland Cemetery in Pella. Memorials: Organ Renovation Fund of First Reformed Church, Pella. Visiting hours at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella are open today, with family present 6:30-8 p.m. today.

Cornelia Leydens was born Dec. 6, 1915, in Jasper County near Lynnville and Sully to Matthew and Minnie Kloet. She lived near Sully, Monroe and Otley, and later in Hollandale, Minn., before the family moved to Pella. Katie received a grade-school education, then worked in Newton. She then worked at the Pella Canning Factory and the Overall Factory in Pella.

On Jan. 25, 1938, she married John Ed Klein in Kirksville, Mo. Katie did laundry in her home and was a homemaker, also doing house cleaning for some families in Pella, including the Kanis family. John died Dec. 23, 1998. Katie soon moved to the Sheltered Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center. She was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church in Pella. She enjoyed music, playing the accordion and singing hymns. She was a self-educated speller and an avid reader.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Ralph E. and Clara Hoven Klein and David E. and Janice Ver Ploeg Klein, all of Pella; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lena (Lionel) Potts of Des Moines and Clara (C.W.) Kohler of Novato, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Reuben Leydens; and two sisters: Bessie (Norris) Hagan and Jeanette (Dale) Reeser.
