PELLA - Andy Hoeksema, 87, of 1211 Washington St. in Pella died Thursday morning at Pella Regional Health Center.

He was born March 12, 1915, in Pella to Charles and Johanna Den Adel Hoeksema. He graduated from Pella High School in 1934. He worked for Veenstra and Croll as an apprentice carpenter until they retired.

On April 20, 1941, he married Arloene Jane Schakel in Lancaster, Mo. He entered the U.S. Army in May 1942, serving as a carpenter on the Alaskan Highway. He was discharged as a staff sergeant on Thanksgiving Day 1945.

He then started his own carpentry business, Hoeksema Construction in Pella. His first job was helping build the Pella outdoor swimming pool. His speciality eventually became cabinet making. He and Ray Vander Wilt built many homes together in Pella until he retired at age 65. He enjoyed riding motorcycles with friends. He was a member of the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella.

He is survived by his wife, Arloene; a son, Jack Hoeksema of Pella; two sisters, Margaret Hoeksema and Anna Mae Rus, both of Pella; a brother, Joe Hoeksema and his wife Betty of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Freda Hoeksema of Pella; a nephew and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Dick and Robert.
A private family graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, in Oakwood Cemetery in Pella, the Rev. Kenneth A. Dykstra officiating. Burial with military rites will follow.

Memorials may be made to the dialysis department at Pella Regional Health Center.

Visitation is open today at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home.
