Arvin Lamar Hoogenakker was born to Henrietta and Daniel Hoogenakker in Pella, Iowa on October 17, 1923. He attended Pella community schools prior to serving the Army in World War II. He received an honorable discharge from the 612 Engineers European Theater after earning 5 Battle Stars and a Bronze Star.

He married Karlyne Ann Nichols of Grinnell, IA on August 22, 1948, a day which is fondly remembered as one of the hottest days ever. They were married for almost 57 years. The couple lived in Pella, where Arvin worked as a painting contractor.

He and his wife proudly owned and operated Hoogenakker Decorating for over 15 years. Arvin was a dedicated and diligent worker who postponed his retirement until age 71 because there was always "just one more job to finish up". He and his wife shared a close circle of friends who enjoyed his sense of humor and dancing style. His infectious laugh will always be remembered.

He and his wife retired to Avon Park, FL where Arvin enjoyed working in the yard and decorating for Christmas. He and his wife recently returned to the Midwest to be closer to their family.

Arvin was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline De Jong, and brother, John Hoogenakker.

He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband by his wife Karlyne.

He will be missed by his son Ron and Peggy Hoogenakker of Marshall, WI, and daughter Jillian Hoogenakker of Verona WI. Arvin will always be remembered as "Grandpa Knock-Knock" to his grandchildren Katie and Andy Hoogenakker of Madison, WI. Arvin was fortunate to also have step-grandchildren, Will Plamondon of Indianapolis, and Beth Hattel (Brett) and great grand daughter Brigid Hattle of Chicago, IL. Arvin was a remarkable man who will be greatly missed by all who met him. He taught his family to live in the same kind and generous manner by which he lived.

Services were held at the All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 4058 Lien Road, Madison on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella starting at 2 p.m. on Friday.
