Funeral services for Mrs. V. Joy Hedrick, 77, of Pella were held July 2, 2002 at the Second Reformed Church in Pella, the Rev. Norman J. Schouten officiating. Music was provided by organist Mrs. Judy Steenhoek.

Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Casket bearers were Mr. Marlyn Klimstra, Mr. Tom Steward, Mr. A.F. Tysseling, Mr. John Vander Wert, Mr. Stanley Ver Ploeg and Mr. John P. Ver Meer.

Vivian Joy Hackert was born on March 26, 1925 at Pella, Iowa, the daughter of John and Stella Liter Hackert. She was baptized on May 2, 1926 at the Second Reformed Church in Pella and made profession of her faith there on February 27, 1940. Joy, as she was known, attended the Pella Public Schools where she participated in band, vocal groups and drama. Joy graduated from Pella High School in 1942. That fall she enrolled in Central College in Pella. On June 1, 1944 she was united in marriage with Ned Arthur Hedrick at St. John's Chapel in Del Monte, Calif.

For several months they lived in Pacific Grove near Fort Ord where Ned was serving with the U.S. Army. They then moved to Brownwood, Texas where they lived until Ned went overseas. Joy returned to Pella to complete her education at Central College and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree, Cume Laude, in June of 1946. Following her graduation and Ned's discharge, they moved to Iowa City where Joy worked in the University of Iowa Athletic Department and Veterans Service Office while Ned attended the University of Iowa. In 1948 they returned to Pella where they became life-long residents and Joy remained a devoted homemaker.

Joy loved music, was an accomplished pianist, sang in the Second Reformed Church choir and sang with the Tulip Time Dutch Street Singers. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and the highlights of her summers for many years was the family vacations at Lake Okoboji at Spirit Lake, Iowa. Joy had been a member of both the Ladies Social and Literary Guild, PEO Chapter BU, Pella Historical Society and Pella Opera House Partners Board. She enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing bridge, sailing and doing needle-point and knitting. In 1996 Joy began showing symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease but continued an active life until suffering a stroke in 1998 while playing golf at the Pella Golf and Country Club where she was an active member.

Joy was able to continue living at home with her faithful husband, Ned, until early 1999 when she became a resident in the Sheltered Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center. Joy was cared for there where she passed away early Friday morning, June 28, 2002 at the age of 77 years, three months and two days.

She is survived by her husband , Ned, of Pella and their three children: Ned Arthur Hedrick, Jr. and his wife, Watona King of Omaha, Neb.; Carol Sue Hedrick of Pella; and John Ellis Hedrick and his wife, Diana of Pella; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Joy also leaves a brother, Robert Hackert of Long Beach, Calif.; along with Ned's sister, Eloise Houser of Mesa, Ariz. and his brother, Harold Hedrick and his wife, Danis of Sully.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Stella Hackert and a brother, Logan Hackert, who died in infancy.

Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk - Duven Funeral Home in Pella.

Memorials may be made to the Second Reformed Church or the Sheltered Care Unit of the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella.
