Funeral services for Arnold O. Haugen, 92, of Pella, formerly of Decorah, Iowa were held July 9 at Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. Interment was in the Hauge Lutheran Church Cemetery. Casket bearers were Kai Haugen, Darrell DeReus, Jim Lane, Jon Vine, David Bumann and Brett Alberty.

Arnold Haugen was born May 11, 1910 in Canoe Township, Winneshiek Co., Iowa to Ole Andreas Pederson Haugen and Karen Petrine Talhaug Haugen. Arnold was the 13th of 15 children, two of whom died at birth.

Arnold graduated from Decorah High School in 1930.

On September 18, 1934 he married Vneda Maxine Johnson of Decorah. Dr. Haugen earned his B.S. degree from Washington State (1936) and his M.S. (1939) and Ph. D. (1941) from the University of Michigan. His career included positions with the U.S. Forest Service, Michigan Department of Conservation and Michigan State University.

From 1949 to 1957 he was leader of the Auburn University Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. From 1957 until he retired in 1973, Dr. Haugen was leader of the Wildlife Research Unit at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He served for 12 years on the Iowa Governor's Commission on Outdoor Resources and served as president for one year of the Iowa Academy of Science. He had a great love for nature and the out-of-doors and was an ardent advocate of environmental conservation and the wise use of resources for the long term. Arnold had a life long interest in archery and bowhunting and was a long time member of the Sons of Norway. He held membership in and has been a leader in many organizations devoted to academics, conservation and his Norwegian heritage.

He is survived by his wife, Vneda, of Pella; 3 children: Sallie (Mrs. Darrell) DeReus of Leighton; Sonja (Mrs. James) Lane of Northville, MI; Chris Haugen and his wife, Sunny, of Fargo, ND; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara Lau of Milwaukee, WI.

He was preceded in death by a son, Arnold; a great-grandchild, Johnathan Nelles; five sisters and eight brothers. Arrangements were handled by Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Norwegian-American Museum, Decorah, Iowa or to the donor's choice.
