As a young man, he raised coon dogs and was known as "Shorty". In September of 1949 Melvin enlisted into the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in August of 1953.

Melvin continued working at the Rolscreen Company for 40 years, 31 of which he had perfect attendance. He retired from the woodshop in 1994. He and Katherina then did custodial work at the Pella National Bank, now known as US Bank of Pella, for 8 1/2 years.

He was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella where he attended faithfully. He was also a member of the Chairman's Club at the Pella Corporation in Pella. Melvin, a man of very few words, enjoyed gardening and riding his bicycle.

In August of 2002, Melvin was diagnosed with lung cancer. He passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella on Friday, November 1, 2002 at the age of 71 years, two months and three days.
