Funeral services for Berdena M. Van Rheenen, 89, of Pella, who died Monday, June 2, 2003 at the Pella Regional Health Center Sheltered Care Unit, were held Wednesday, June 4, at the Third Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Rev. John Van Den Berg officiated at the services. A committal service was held with Rev. Norm Kolenbrander officiating. Family prayer services were held with Rev. Ralph Van Rheenen officiating. Lena Vandenberg was organist.

Interment was at the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Casketbearers were Darl Van Rheenen, Gary Van Rheenen, Irvin Van Rheenen, Lola Kramer, Paul Wielard, and Valerie Wielard.

Berdena, the daughter of Gerrit B. and Cornelia (Hollebrands) Kolenbrander, was born March 4, 1914 on a farm near Pella. She was a lifelong resident of the Pella area, living most of her life on the farm. She attended the Flint Ridge Country Grade School. On February 17, 1937 she married Valentine Van Rheenen at her parents' home near Pella.

She was a member of the Third Reformed Church in Pella where she enjoyed the ladies society. She also enjoyed crocheting. Nine years ago, Berdena and Val left the farm and moved to Pella.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Dick Kolenbrander, Elias Kolenbrander, Rev. William Kolenbrander, James Kolenbrander, and Rev. Henry Kolenbrander; two sisters, Janet De Kock and Laurina Kool; and two half-sisters, Johanna Ver Meer and Rachel Van Dusseldorp.

She is survived by her husband, Val Van Rheenen of Pella; a son and his wife, Verlan and Norma Van Rheenen of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a daughter and her husband, Sharyl and Marvin Wielard of Sioux Center; four grandchildren, Sara Rapp, Susan Van Rheenen, Marc Wielard, and Paul Wieldard; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Angeline Van Rheenen of Pella.

Memorials may be made to the Comfort House - Hospice of Pella.

Arrangements were made by Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.
