Funeral services for Barbara "Anna" Van Essen, 97, of Pella were held on May 24 at Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella, with Pastor Norman Kolenbrander officiating. Music was provided by organist Nora De Reus.

Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Casket bearers were Robert Van Essen, Don De Reus, Ray Robson, Doyle Van Essen, Arthur De Cook, Rick Robson.

Barbara "Anna" Van Essen was born September 9, 1905 near Monroe to Everett John and Betsy (Westerkamp) De Haai. Anna lived near Pella until 1926.

On February 27, 1926, Anna was united in marriage with Martin Van Essen of Otley. They moved east of Prairie City and lived there for many years. Following Martin's death on August 16, 1958, Anna moved to Pella and worked for Roy Drake and the Pella Community Nursing Home, Anna originally was a member of Second Reformed Church in Pella and later transferred her membership to First Reformed Church in Prairie City.

Following Martin's death, she became a member at Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. Anna passed away on Wednesday, May 21, at the Pella Regional Health Center- Long Term Care Unit.

Anna is survived by 15 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Everett and Betsy De Haai; her husband: Martin Van Essen; a brother: John De Haai; and three sisters: Polona Pettet, Mae Hoksbergen, and Myrtle Gates.

Arrangements were handled by Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Reformed Church in Pella.
