Memorial services for Helen Glendening, 89 of Pella, who passed away Oct. 15 were held Oct. 20 at Second Reformed Church in Pella. The Revs. Steve and Sophie Mathonnet-Vander Well officiated. Dr. Davis Folkerts was the organist, the Rev. Nathan Busker assisted, Erin Glendening played the handbells, and Anne Petrie was the soloist

Committal services were held at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Casket bearers were her family.

Helen Marian Vander Linden was born on May 30, 1914, in Sioux City to Herman William and Nelle G. (Van Vliet) Vander Linden. In 1917 she and her parents moved to Leighton. Helen received her elementary education at the Leighton Independent School in Leighton, and she graduated from Pella High School in Pella. with the Class of 1931. Helen was privileged to continue her education at Central College in Pella. There she was active on the debate team. She graduated from Central in 1935 with a major in mathematics. Helen taught mathematics at high schools in Lake Park and Greenfield for three years.

Helen married Howard Glendening on June 4, 1938, at the home of her parents in Leighton by the Rev. Ira J. Hesselink. To this union two children were born: Richard Norman and Linda Kay. Following their marriage they lived in Moline, Ill. After moving back to the area, Helen was a homemaker and was employed as the secretary in the Admissions Department at Central College in Pella from 1962 until 1976. Howard passed away unexpectedly on June 1, 1985, at the age of 72 years. Following his death, Helen moved to Pella.

Helen is survived by her two children: Richard N. Glendening and his wife, Mary (Roorda) and Linda K. Glendening, all of Pella, and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Helen leaves her younger sister Margaret Louise and husband Ernest Steenhoek of Pella, and the following sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Dorothea (Glendening) Rehling of Galesburg, Ill, Bobbie (Glendening) and Hal Williams of West Palm Beach, Flor., Juanita (Glendening) and Clarence Den Adel of Pella, Arlene (Glendening) Rossetti of Gerlaw, Ill., Shirley (Glendening) Wilkins of Maumelle, Ariz., Robert and Vivian Glendening of Pella, and Martha (Glendening) and Edward Calkins of Advance, N.C.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, and her parents: Herman Wm. Vander Linden and Nelle G. Vander Linden.

For those desiring, memorials may be designated for Central College or the Second Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa

Funeral arrangments were handled by Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella.
