Obituary

Services for George Roff, 96, Pleasantville, who died on April 14, 1993, at the Pleasant Care Nursing Home in Pleasantville, were April 16, 1993, at the Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville. Burial was at Lincoln Cemetery in Marion county.

Pastor Tim Stanwood officiated at the service. Music was provided by Darlene Mooberry and Beth and Tim Stanwood. Pall bearers were Dan Calhoun, David Glick, Dale Herold, Jamie Jackson, Gary Kingery, Richard Kingery, Jerry Roff and Jim Worthington.

George was born on April 13, 1897, in Cordova, the son of W.P. and Yetska DeBok Roff. He lived and farmed in the Cordova area until 1928 when he moved south of the river in Knoxville and Pleasantville area. He loved to trade horses in his younger days and farmed all of his life until retiring in 1979, when he sold his farm near Pleasantville, and moved to his present home.

On December 3, 1919, he was married to Hazel Marie Bennett. she preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 1966, after 47 years of marriage. After his wife's death, George had several housekeepers; Cecil Hicks Schurman who was with him for nine years before she passed away and Betty Morgan who was with him from December 1975 until November 1992 when he entered the Pleasant Care Nursing Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Johnny Roff and Sauley Roff; two sister, Stella Roff and Rose Roff, who died as children of whooping cough; six sisters, Anna Rees , Hattie Fee, Lucy Fee, Della Sharp, Maggie Roush and Edna Wares; two brothers, Wall Roff and Charlie Roff; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Survivors include two daughters, Irma Karr of Knoxville and Velta Light of Pleasantville; two sons, Bob Roff and Les Roff, both of Knoxville; and one nephew, Leslie Shaffer, whom George raised like a son after Leslie's mother Ruth, who was Hazel's sister, died during childbirth; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; and many nephews.

Memorials may be made to Christ's church in Knoxville or the Pleasantville Rescue Unit.

The Williams funeral Home in Knoxville was in charge of the arrangements.
