Funeral services for Raymond Montgomery Rumley, 92, of Pershing, who died Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at his home, were held Saturday, June 24 at the Zion United Methodist Church in Pershing. Rev. Steven Bagby officiated at the service. Janet Westberg was organist.

Interment was at Zion Cemetery in Marion County. Casket bearers were Michael R. Bruce Jr., John A. Bryson Jr., Eutaz Cannon, Henry Claytor, Aubry Flemings and Bryant Smith.

Raymond was born on February 29, 1908 in Keota, Mo., the son of Mable Pearl Boyd and General Harvey Rumley. He was one of ten children. The family moved to Buxton where Raymond attended school.

He married Berthell Arthyia Taylor on April 12, 1930. To this union 12 children were born. The couple had recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.

Raymond worked in the local coal mines for many years. He later worked on construction. He was known by many friends and relatives as "Ruff".

Raymond and Berthell enjoyed buying and selling antiques. They enjoyed going to antique shows with their wares. Raymond was a family man who spent many happy hours with his children and later grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Raymond always considered his greatest accomplishment to be his long marriage and raising 12 children successfully.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; two sisters; three daughters, Ethelbert Colton, Marjorie Parker and Beverly Winfrey and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Berthell Rumley of Pershing; five daughters, Dana Burnside of Minneapolis, Minn., Kathaleen Rumley of Waterloo, Carole Bruce of Pershing, JoEsther Bryson of Pershing and Vickie Rumley of Pershing; four sons, Raymond Rumley, Jr. of Des Moines, William Rumley of Des Moines, Richard Rumley of Des Moines and Thomas Rumley of Pershing; 45 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren: 24 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Marguerite Washington of Knoxville, Mary Wells of Des Moines, Lillian Stinson of Milwaukee, Wis. and Pearlie Sceaver of California; two sister-in-laws, Annette Rumley of Pershing and Dorothy Rumley of Des Moines as well as many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Zion United Methodist Church.

Arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home.
