Funeral services for Raymond James, 90, of Knoxville, and formerly of Thornburg, who died on Monday, December 11, 2000, at Griffin Nursing Center, were held on Thursday, December 14, at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer.

Interment was at the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg.

Raymond was born on October 13, 1910, in rural What Cheer, the son of Ira and Jennie Garrett James. He was raised and educated in the Thornburg area.

Raymond married Helen Rose Doughman in 1929 in Missouri. He had farmed near Barnes City, Oskaloosa and Delta. He had also worked in a coal mine. He later moved to Death Valley, Calif. where he managed a gas station at the Furnace Creek Ranch. He later returned to Iowa and in 1974 he retired and moved to Knoxville. Raymond enjoyed golfing.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald James; and three sisters, Agnes Dutemple, Olive Nichols, and Eva Lawrence.

He is survived by his wife, Helen James of Knoxville; two sons, Larry James of Prairie City and Marion James of Knoxville; a brother, Everett James of Sigourney; four sisters, Opal Huffman of Oskaloosa, Gladys Benson of Oskaloosa, Wilma Snakenburg of Sigourney, and Viola Scherer of Agency; seven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in his name.

Arrangements were made by Harden Funeral Homes.
