Obituaries – Lewis Brawner
Lewis Brawner was well known and highly respected throughout Marion County. He died in the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, Saturday, October 13, 1917. Lewis Browner, son of Basil and Sarah Brawner, was born in McCoupen County, Illinois, on March 18, 1857. As a boy of seven he moved with his parents to Marion County, Iowa, in 1864. His boyhood days were spent with his parents on the farm attending country school and growing up into youth and manhood. During which time he sought the love of Miss Emma Karn, which was consummated in marriage on December 14, 1882. Their home was blessed with ten children: Orvice E. of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming; Myrtle G. Thomas of Dallas [Marion County, Iowa]; Florence E. Tener of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming; Ralph H. of Dallas; George L., Mabel A. Jones, Forest C. and Glen Brawner, all of Melcher. These with a devoted wife, an aged mother, nine grandchildren, five brothers and three sisters with a host of friends mourn his death. About a year ago he became troubled with a timorous cancer of the face, and in January he had an operation performed in the Methodist hospital, Des Moines. The relief being only temporary, he returned in February and they removed a part of the cheek bone. From this time he perceptibly failed, gaining strength at times, then gradually growing weaker. Accompanied by his faithful wife, he endeavored to regain health by visiting with his children in Wyoming, and in one week was compelled to return direct to the hospital. He lingered about three weeks and he with the family realized he was gradually sinking away. During the time of his suffering he was made happy with a strong, clear conversion which occurred on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. His pastor recently baptized him and his wife together and took them into full membership in the Methodist church. He died Saturday evening, October 13, 1917, aged 60 years, 6 months and 26 days. The body was brought immediately to the home well known as the Brawner farm where he and his wife have lived for twenty-eight years enjoying their children and their many friends. The funeral services were held in the Melcher church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. A. E. Jervis, assisted by the Rev. William Mercer of Dallas. A large crowd was in attendance; all was beautifully decorated, combined choirs sang, and the interment was made in the Newbern Cemetery.
