Myron Walter Nollen was the youngest of five children born to Walter Henry and Grietje (Maggie)Van Houweling Nollen. He was born on January 26, 1915, and raised on the Nollen family farm just west of Pella, Iowa. Mike, as he was known, attended the East Silver Grove Country Grade School for one year, completed grade school at Lincoln and Webster in Pella and graduated from Pella High School in 1932. On March 15, 1939, he was united in marriage with Cordelia Marie Van Zante a daughter of Albert D. and Elsie McReynolds Van Zante, at Monroe, Iowa. Mike and Cordelia had six daughters: Joan Ruth, Edith May, Carol Ann, Mary Lynn (deceased in 1953), Jean Lorie and Linda Joy. Following their marriage, Mike and Cordelia lived on the family farm and farmed with his brother, Elmer Nollen, for five years. In 1944 their family moved northwest of Pella where he rented a farm in the Bunker Hill neighborhood for 10 years. They resided there until they purchased a farm three miles north of Pella in 1954. Farming remained a passion of Mike's his entire life. Cordelia passed away on August 7, 1999, at the age of 82 years. For 28 years they spent winters in Palm Gardens Park, Mesa, Arizona. Following her death Mike continued to winter in Arizona and travel. Mike remained a very active man at this advanced age of 95 years. He was a skilled wood-worker, golfed regularly, and enjoyed playing shuffleboard and cards. In 2001 he moved into Pella and at the time of his death was residing at the Hilltop Manor. Mike passed away on Sunday morning, September 26, 2010, at the Pella Regional Health Center. Mike was baptized in 1915 at the Second Reformed Church where he made a profession of his faith in 1928. He remained a very faithful member of the Second Reformed Church his entire life where he had served as a Sunday School teacher, an Elder and a Deacon on the consistory. Mike had been a 4-H leader for 25 years.
Surviving are five daughters and their families: Joan and Lee Nossaman, Leighton, Iowa; Edith Buwalda, Pella, Iowa; Carol and Michael Reimers, Des Moines, Iowa; Jean Nollen and Joel Hutchinson, Nevada, Iowa; Linda and Mark Woofter, Clive, Iowa.
Myron leaves three sisters-in-law: Marie (Elmer) Nollen of Pella, Minnie (Van Zante) Miller of Newton, Iowa and Ellen (Francis) Van Zante of Pella. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cordelia; a daughter, Mary Lynn; his parents, Walter and Maggie Nollen; his parents-in-law: Albert and Elsie Van Zante; his four siblings and their spouses: Dorothy and John R. Van Gorp, Marion and Dorothy Nollen, Herman and Opal Nollen, Elmer Nollen; and the following brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Francis Van Zante, Sam Miller, and Agnes (Van Zante) Shannon.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Second Reformed Church. Memorials may be given to the Second Reformed Church. Arrangements were handled by Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home.
