J. M. Van Vliet, Otley, Dies At 71

James M. Van Vliet. 71, Otley business man and postmaster there for 40 years, died Feb. 1 at his home in Otley.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Van Pyk-Duven funeral home with the Rev. Fran k Snutlier officiating. Mrs. Ralph De Cook was the organist. Casket bearers were Dwaine Meyer, J. B. Tucker. Elmer Frank , John Vanden Ban. Elmer Van Duseldorp and Henry Shetterly. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.

Mr. Van Vliet was born in Pella April 7. 1896. a son of Gysbert and Jennie Donai Van Vliet. After graduating from Pella high school in 1914. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Minnesota and became district commercial supervisor at Duluth.

June 20. 1921, he married Ethel B. Trumblee of Manchester, Iowa. Five years later he purchased the general merchandise business of H. L. Renaud at Otley and operated it until April 30. 1966. the same year he retired as postmaster.

Mr. Van Vliet was a member of the Pella Masonic lodge and the Royal Arch Masons at Vermillion. S. D. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Van Veen-Van Hemert post, American Legion.

Surviving are his wife: three daughters. Lois, who is Mrs. Edward Kopecky of Cedar Rapids. Lila. Mrs. Glen Van Vark of Cedar Falls, and Mary, Mrs. Roger Peterson of Cedar Falls; a son. James Van Vliet. Jr.. of Chicago. 111., one sister, Charlotte, Mrs. Harry Renaud of Pella, and 14 grandchildren. A son. Ralph, died in 1948. His parents and four brothers, Cornelius. John, Ben and Bert, also are deceased.
