MRS. J. M. VAN VLIET

Services for Mrs. James M. (Ethel) Van Vliet, 76, longtime Otley resident, were Friday at the Chapel of Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Snuttjer, officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Pella.

She died Wednesday at the Boroom (Cedar West) Nursing Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Mrs. Van Vliet was born June 17, 1894, at Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Trumblee and Edith Terry. She was graduated from the Manchester High School and from Iowa State Normal College (now the University of Northern Iowa) at Cedar Falls. She taught school at Manchester and Vermillion, S. D. She married James M. Van Vliet on June 20, 1921.

They lived at Hibbing, Montevideo, and Duluth, Minn., while Mr. Van Vliet was employed by the Bell Telephone Co. They moved to Otley in 1926 and took over the Otley General Merchandise Store, where Mr. Van Vliet served as postmaster until his death, Feb. 1, 1968. Also preceding Mrs. Van Vliet in death was a sister, Mrs. Harry (Eva) Clemmons, Manchester; a brother, who died in infancy; and a son, Ralph Van Vliet, who died in 1948.

Survivors include: three daughters, Mrs. Edward F. (Lois) Kopecky, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Glen (Lila) Van Vark, Cedar Falls, Mrs. Roger (Mary) Peterson, Waterloo; one son, James Van Vliet Jr. , Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Ida) Redding, Dubuque, Mrs. Herbert (Olga) Cook, Ames, and Mrs. Charles (Ruby) Kehrli, Ryna, Iowa; and 15 grandchildren.
