MRS. LENA POORTINGA

Lena Van Rheenen, daughter of William Van Rheenen and Elizabeth Bogaards, was born on a farm northwest of Pella on March 13, 1886. She departed this life on December 6, 1956, having attained the age of 70 years, 8 months, and 23 days.

On January 20, 1916, she was united in marriage to Garrett Poortinga who preceded her in death on May 25, 1945.

She made profession of her faith in early girlhood in the Christian Church at Galesburg, later transferring her membership to the Third Reformed Church of Pella.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a sister, Mrs. Arie Meyer, and her brother John Van Rheenen.

Those who are left to mourn her passing are 5 brothers and 5 sisters, namely: Henry, Mrs. Case Willemsen, Abe of Pleasantville, Sam, Mrs. Jake Klein of Monroe, Mrs. Worp Borgman, Fred of Des Moines, Mrs. Diller Vander Ploeg, Lawrence of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Gertrude Boles of Long Bench, California.

She was a kind and loving person and bore her sickness patiently. For the past two years she had been cared for at the Bathesda Sanatorium in Denver, Colo.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 10, 1956 at 2 p.m. from the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home. The Rev. Russell J. Redeker officiated and interment was in Hewitt Cemetery near Galesburg. The hymns "He Leadeth Me" and "Abide With Me" were sung by Verlan Van Rheenen, a great nephew of the deceased. Casket bearers were: Donald Meyer, Warner Willemsen, William H. Van Rheenen, Mark Vander Ploeg, Marion L. Van Rheenen, and Robert Borgman, nephews of the deceased.
