Carroll Ray Zickel was the first of six children that were born to Guy Otis and Antoinette Marie (Naaktgeboren) Zickel. He was born on January 25, 1928, at Pella, Iowa. Carroll graduated from grade school in Pella where he grew up and was raised in a large family, which at that time presented many challenges for his mother and father. As a young man, Carroll began working for Rock Island railroad making rails and railroad ties and then at the Rolscreen Factory. While roller skating in Oskaloosa, Iowa he met Phyllis Mae Lowry. On March 14, 1950, Carroll and Phyllis were united in marriage at the Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa and to this union two children were born: Daniel Ray and Jolene Kay. In 1951 ‘Kelly’ became a member of the Pella Street Department for the City of Pella. Although his main duty was to “hit the streets” of Pella and sweep the grime away, he also worked on various other city maintenance jobs. ‘Kelly’ installed water main pipes by hand and to do the job had to get right down in the manhole. In 1988 he retired after 37 years of hard work and dedication in maintaining the reputation that Pella had in being the “cleanest town in Iowa”. Carroll continued to enjoy Tulip Time and could always find something to do as time went on. He was truly a family man.

In 2013 Carroll and Phyllis became residents at Fair Haven East in Pella where Carroll remained a dedicated husband and help-mate. On Thursday, December 31, 2015, he passed away unexpectedly at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 25 days Carroll is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis M. Zickel and their two children and their families:
