Sophia Den Hartog

PELLA – Sophia Den Hartog, 81, of Pella, a native and former resident of the Sully community, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Pella Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pella First Reformed Church.

The Rev. Edward G. Veldhuizen, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Sully Cemetery.

Family visitation will be held at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

A memorial fund in her name has been established.

She is survived by her husband, John C., of Pella; two daughters, Janice (Mrs. Edwin) Horman of Dallas, Texas, and Sylvia (Mrs. Edward) Hoksbergen of Sully; a son, Bernie J. Van Roekel of Arlington, Texas; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two step-children, Raymond Den Hartog of Clear Lake and Betty (Mrs. Kenneth) Glewen of Cedar Grove, Wis.; six step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a sister, Marie (Mrs. William E.) Jansen and five brothers, Charles, Tony, Paul, James and Abe Vos.

Mrs. Den Hartog was a member of the Pella First Reformed Church.

The daughter of John A. and Jenny Dykstra Vos, she was born July 31, 1909 in Sully and attended rural schools in the sully area.

She was married to Ludolf Rolffs in January, 1931, and they resided in the Sully are until moving to Denver, Colo., where they resided for five years.

After the death of her husband in September, 1939, she returned to the Sully area and Jan. 29, 1942 was married to Gysbert Van Roekel in Pella.

They farmed in the Sully area until moving to Pella in 1952.

Mr. Van Roekel died Feb. 12, 1960.

She was married to John C. Den Hartog March 18, 1977 and the couple resided first at the Pella Manor and later at Hilltop Manor.

Mrs. Den Hartog had been a resident of the Pella Community Nursing Home since March, 1990. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Thurs 7 Feb 1991.
