Tuesday morning our fellow citizen Jacobus Buerkens died here quite unexpectedly at the blessed age of 81 years and about 8 months. Yesterday afternoon, the funeral was led by Rev. H. Douwstra at the Third Reformed Church after which the burial took place at the old cemetery. Forty years ago, Buerkens came to America with his family. Of this time he lived 9 years in Burlington, Iowa, and the last 31 years in Pella. The deceased was one of our most esteemed citizens. Because of neuralgia specific to his head, he had been unable to work in recent years except for house chores or in his garden. Many, especially his elderly wife and other family members will miss this quiet, kind man who was greatly loved by all for his Christian virtues. [Translated by J. Smith.]
