F. Orval Baughman

Services for Frederick Orval (Slick) Baughman, 95, of Pella, who died July 14, 1995 at his home, were held July 17 at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home.

Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery.

The Rev. Forrest Whitlatch officiated at the services. Music was provided by Eileen Smiley, accompanist, and Charles Rus, soloist.

Pallbearers were Lyle Horman, Skip Allgood, Arlan De Heer, Jeff Clauson, Lawrence Breuklander, and Jack Pinegar.

Mr. Baughman was born on June 25, 1900 at Ottumwa, the son of William Henry and Sarah Klingler Bachman. He attended grade school and lived in an orphanage until the age of 16 when he began making his home with the Peter J. Van Steenwyks at Pella.

On August 7, 1923, he married Jeanette Schakel at the home of her parents near Pella. They farmed in the Amsterdam neighborhood south of Pella for 49 years. In 1965,they moved into Pella.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1978; his parents; three sisters, Zelda, Mabel, and Hazel; one brother, Archie; and one great granddaughter, Kara De Heer.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John (Caroline) Smith of Oskaloosa and Mrs. Marion (Vera) Horman of Pella; one brother, LeRoy of of Knoxville; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Bachman of Fort Collins, Colo. and Mrs. Lena Rumbaugh of Pella; and seven nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established to the Church of the Nazarene.
