Derald Glen Zickel was born on February 28, 1937, at Pella, Iowa. He was the fourth of six children that were born to Guy Otis and Antonette Marie Naaktgeboren Zickel. 'Bud' as he was known as a young lad, graduated from Webster Grade School and then attended Pella High School in Pella. He grew up in Pella and was raised with a large family, which at that time presented many challenges for his mother and father.

As a young man, Derald was employed for many years at Vander Beek Produce picking up and delivering eggs. He also worked at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids, Iowa until becoming an employee of the Iowa Air National Guard. Derald was serving with the Iowa Air National Guard during the Gulf War and Vietnam War. Derald was a member of the Food Service Section and nothing in the food line was too good for the Airmen and Officers. He traveled abroad numerous times with the guard as a maintenance supervisor for the supply area tool crib. He received numerous honors and awards and retired in 1993 as a Master Sergeant after serving for 38 years. Derald served his country faithfully and honorably.

Following his retirement from the guard, Derald worked part time at Stravers Hardware, for C. L. Leydens and at the Pella Golf and Country Club in Pella. He was always neat, thorough and precise in what ever he did or pursued. Derald was a member of the Welfare Lodge No.628, A.F. & A.M. at Norwalk, Iowa and remained active as a retired Iowa Air National Guardsman.

On Sunday, April 15, 2007, Derald passed away suddenly at his residence, 207 Lindview Drive in Pella, at the age of 70 years, one month and 15 days.

Those who will honor his life are his two older brothers and their wives: Carroll Ray and Phyllis (Lowry) Zickel of Pella, Norman Guy and Arlene (McBride) Zickel of Wellsville, Kansas; an older sister and her husband, Willa Maxine and Bill Hart of Pella; his youngest sister, Linda Sue Fisk of Pella; a brother-in-law, Dean Vos of Bussey, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
