Vern Madison Ingle was born on Oct. 7, 1926, near Runnells, the son of Charles Ingle and Electa (Miller) Ingle.

He was raised in the Runnells and Swan areas, graduating with the Pleasantville High School Class of 1943.

In 1945, Vern was inducted into the United States Army. During boot camp, he was married on March 10, 1945, to Nora Lee Sherwood in Temple, Texas. He received the Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Meritorious Unit Award. He was honorably discharged in August 1946. Following the war, Vern and Nora Lee first made their home in Knoxville.

Vern worked in the dry cleaning business for a couple of years in Knoxville. The couple then moved to their farm north of Pleasantville. They farmed full-time and Vern also worked at the ASCS office for over 35 years. He and Nora Lee also raised 2,000 chickens a year and supplied local restaurants with eggs, including Johnnie and Kay's. He was always proud of his crops and tended them carefully, always watching for weeds, especially thistles.

Vern had a variety of interests, he was a 4-H leader, a sports enthusiast, a mushroom hunter, and he picked walnuts and grew a large vegetable garden. He loved sharing his vegetables, mushrooms and walnuts with all of his friends.

Vern and Nora Lee loved company; everyone was always welcome in their home and they served hundreds of meals to family and friends through the years. He was a very generous person and was always concerned with other people's welfare above his own.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Pleasant Hill, where he served as an Elder for over 35 years. His greatest love was his family and he cherished each and every member. He especially took pride in attending his grandkid's activities. Vern will be remembered as a loving and devoted servant of the Lord and all mankind.

He passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital at the age of 81.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by seven brothers: Goldie, Walter, Glenn, Harold, Gilbert, Paul and Lester and one sister, Hazel Duckstein.

Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 62 years, Nora Lee; his children, Suzanne Harvey (Bruce) of Pleasant Hill, Ned Ingle (Connie) of Ft. Dodge, David Ingle (Joyce) of Mitchellville, and Cynthia Morris (Mark) of Lee's Summit, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; his brother, Marvin of Prairie City and many other family members and friends.
