Bette Helen Van Zee was born on March 25, 1922 in Perry to Bert and Blanche Watters.

She was raised in the Dallas Center area and graduated from Dallas Center High School. On May 29, 1949, Bette married Howard Van Zee in Dallas Center. The couple lived in Dallas Center until moving to Pleasantville in 1951. They bought their first home north of Pleasantville in 1959 where they settled and have lived until very recently moving into town.

Bette enjoyed flower gardening, musicals and was an outstanding cook. She had a passion for golf and was very active in the Pleasantville Country Club. She was also a member of the Pleasantville Christian Church. Bette's greatest joy was her husband, children and grandchildren, whom she adored.

Bette passed away on April 27, 2007, at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 85.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two sisters and a daughter, Terri Lynn in infancy and a grandson, Darren Van Zee.

Survivors include her husband, Howard; son, John of Yorba Linda, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Clark of Palm Desert, Calif. and Vicki Johnston of Lincoln, Mo.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends. Funeral services were held at Mason Funeral Home on April 30 with Pastor John Claussen officiating.

Interment was in Pleasantville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to On With Life of Ankeny.
