Esther Irene Overton was born on April 29, 1921, in Waukee to Carl and Julia (Lankford) Burt.

She was raised and attended school in Dallas. She attended Simpson College for two years, receiving her teaching degree. She taught school in Dallas, Germantown, and Reinbeck. Irene married Azel "Jim" Overton on June 3, 1959, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Melcher. The couple lived on an acreage south of Knoxville for many years before moving into town in 2005. Jim passed away on Dec. 7, 2005.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed quilting, reading, recaning chairs and flower gardening.

Irene passed away on March 2, 2007, at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics at the age of 85.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Lawrence Burt and sister, Mary Haselhuhn.

Survivors include a sister, Lois Pedersen of Omaha, Neb.; brother, Raymond Burt (LaBeth) of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Jerry Haselhuhn of Dallas; sister-in-law, Betty Burt of Melcher and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church on March 6 with Rev. Joel Picard officiatingInterment was in Graceland Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
