Lorain Margaret Kingery was born on Sept. 7, 1913, in Coal Ridge to Gardner and Maude (DeMoss) Betterton.

She married Ray Willet Kingery on Jan. 8, 1935, in Pella. The couple moved to a farm near Columbia in 1938 where they farmed and raised their family there for 36 years. In 1974 the couple retired from farming and moved to Knoxville. Ray passed away on June 24, 1980. Lorain continued to live in their home until 2003 when she moved to Park Lane Assisted Living.

In her youth, Lorain was a member of the Coal Ridge Baptist Church, and later the Columbia Methodist Church. Ray and Lorain also helped with the church youth group, 4-H and the Farm Bureau Young People.

The couple enjoyed the outdoors and fishing, taking many trips to Canada with family and friends. Lorain also enjoyed playing bridge, baking pies and embroidering quilts. She loved spending time with her family and cherished each new grandchild, each of which received a quilt that she had assembled. Most of all, she enjoyed having fun.

Lorain passed away on Dec. 6, 2006, at West Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 93.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ray.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Patricia (Dean) Wallace of Chariton, Norman (Eileen) Kingery of Knoxville and Richard (Shirley) Kingery of Pleasantville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 9 at Bybee and Davis Funeral Home with Pastor Brent Hanna officiating.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Columbia Methodist Church or to the Columbia Fire and Rescue.
