W. Barton Irving was born on Sept. 17, 1924, in Purdy to Walter C. and Nellie Lois Askren Irving. He attended Marion County Schools and Melcher High School and graduated from Chariton High School in 1943.

Barton married Millie Beever in Grimes on Feb. 16, 1944. They were blessed with three children, Roger "Buck", Diana and Rod. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Barton loved working on cars or anything else. He made boats of car hoods and when they started to leak, the kids could use them as sleds. Barton enjoyed spending time with his family.

Barton retired from Firestone in 1986 where he was known as a "trouble shooter." He created new tools for Firestone and they decided he was qualified to do anything in the building since they couldn't keep him on one job. He belonged to the United Rubber Workers Local 310 during his years at Firestone.

Barton passed away on Oct. 18, 2006, at the Lucas County Health Center at the age of 82.

Barton is survived by his wife, Millie; his children, Roger "Buck" & Diane Irving, Diana & Rex Hoover; all of Chariton, Rod & Kim Irving of Tulsa; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; siblings, Bill of Corydon, Veda Peterson of Fort Dodge, Violet Greenslade of California, Carl Irving of Earlham, Sam Irving of Chariton, Jim Irving of Chariton, Della Storm of Chariton, Dave Irving of Russell, and Jane Fitzgerald of Williamson.

Barton is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dick Irving.
