Sonya Rae Rowland was born on Feb. 12, 1938, in Sioux City, the daughter of Cecil and Charlotte (Martin) Brooks.

She married Finis "Tim" Rowland on Feb. 8, 1954. Between 1955 and 1969, the couple made its home in Denver, Colo.; Ramstein, Germany; Sunnymead, Calif.; Sioux City and Wayne, Neb., before settling for good in Knoxville.

Sonya was an office clerk at the Iowa Department of Internal Revenue, the Department of Natural Resources and for EDS. She retired in April 2003.

She was a member of the Knoxville First Baptist Church and of the American Baptist Women. Sonya was very active in her church, serving for several years as a Sunday school teacher.

Sonya died on July 30, 2006, at the Pella Comfort House Hospice at the age of 68.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and sister, Paulette Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Mary (Jeff) Greenlee of Sac City, Laura (Tom) Pierce of Des Moines, Jennie Currier of Portland, Ore., Tim Rowland of Pella, Lisa (Paul) Vande Haar of Pella, Matt (Carolyn) Rowland of Dallas, Texas, and Ruth (Frank) Anderson of Knoxville; brothers, Jerry Brooks of Sioux City, John Holincheck of Overland Park, Kan. and Michael Holincheck of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Shirley Nichols of Sioux City; step-father, John Holincheck of Sioux City; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Aug. 3 at Bybee and Davis Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Smith officiating.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the First Baptist Church Landscaping Fund.
